Stephen G. Terrell Recreation Center

The Stephen G. Terrell Recreation Center is a 149,000 square-foot facility to be built at 1680 W. Exchange Parkway, south of Ridgeview Drive. This $54 million project is envisioned to be completed and opened in summer 2023.

Allen residents prioritized key features of the recreation center through public meetings, workshops and online surveys. Current facility plans include:

  • Two gymnasiums featuring 3 courts for recreation and up to 8 courts for competitive play (multiple sports and activities)
  • Indoor play spaces to engage younger users
  • An indoor walk/jog track with both flat and inclined/stair options
  • Group fitness areas for aerobics, dance and spin classes
  • Weights and cardio areas for independent fitness
  • Child watch area
  • Catering kitchen
  • Outdoor fitness deck

May 13, 2022 - City Council authorizes $1,227,626 contract for design, fabrication and installation of an indoor playground at STRC

July 17, 2021 - Official groundbreaking ceremony for the Stephen G. Terrell Recreation Center

June 8, 2021 - Council approves $40.4 million for recreation center construction

October 14, 2020 - Interior renderings revealed and pricing possibilities discussed at City Council workshop

August 2020 - Allen Sports Association enters into agreement to partner with with the City and to provide funding assistance for the field house portion of the project

December 10, 2019 - Facility officially named "Stephen G. Terrell Park and Recreation Center" after longtime Allen Mayor Stephen Terrell

November 12, 2019 - Allen City Council approves a 72-page feasibility study outlining conceptual designs, suggested amenities and estimated project cost

October 3, 2019 - Staff and architectural team provide updates to the facility’s proposed features and programming opportunities at a community update meeting. View the presentation
